Tourist licence in Catalonia (HUT)
In Catalonia, your holiday let must be entered in the Registre de Turisme de Catalunya under a HUT number. The prefix shows the province: HUTB Barcelona, HUTG Girona, HUTT Tarragona, HUTL Lleida. The register lists only live entries, so a deregistration simply vanishes - and Barcelona has put an end date on every HUT licence in the city: November 2028.
What does a HUT number look like?
The format is HUTB-000001: the establishment-type letters, the province initial and a sequential number. HUT stands for habitatge d'ús turístic - a tourist-use dwelling. HUTCC exists too, alongside the older AT and K forms for other accommodation types.
Most establishments in the Catalan register are habitatges d'ús turístic. The rest are hotels, rural tourism, shared homes, campsites and tourist apartments.
Who grants the licence?
The authorisation is municipal. The town hall grants it and notifies the Registre de Turisme de Catalunya, which assigns the number. Local restrictions therefore weigh as much as the regional rule - and nowhere more than in Barcelona. After years of severe limits, the city has resolved not to renew any HUT licence beyond November 2028. Ten thousand licensed flats have a countdown attached. A portfolio that plans past 2028 on Barcelona HUT stock is planning on an asset that expires.
The sanctions backdrop is the country's harshest, alongside the Balearics. Catalonia's top fine band for marketing unregistered tourist accommodation reaches 600,000 euros.
How do I know a licence is still active?
The Catalan register publishes only live establishments. When a number stops appearing between one snapshot and the next, that disappearance is the deregistration signal. There is no "revoked" field - there is an absence.
That is exactly what our nightly comparison does: we keep each day's snapshot and alert you when a number no longer appears.
